Following in the footsteps of Ted and Paddington (quite literally) another wild animal has entered Hollywood. And his name is Shiva. Shiva is a tiger who appears in the season 7 of The Walking Dead.
Although according to the story Shiva is a female tiger, the character is played by a male tiger with the same name.
Here are the five most interesting facts about Shiva you probably didn’t know before.
1. He Got Lost in the Sea
He may be an A-list celebrity living a life of luxury now, but life hasn’t always treated him well. Back in 2012 he was stranded at sea with a young Indian boy and a camera crew.
They were lost for more than seven months, making him the first tiger in the world to live in a boat with an underage male for more than two days.
He returned home to 40 missed calls and 98 texts, all from his mom.
2. He’s a Former Stock-Photo Model
No description needed here. The photos should speak for themselves.
3. He’s a Victim of Hacking
Shiva’s nudes were leaked on New Years Eve 2016. They almost broke the internet.
4. He Has Only One Party Trick
Shiva does a killer impression of Gene Simmons doing an impression of a tiger. But that’s about it.
5. He Misses the Jungle
Ahh yes, the good old days.
On a Serious Note…
Alright, The Walking Dead production didn’t actually hire a real tiger to play Shiva.
“It’s not particularly humane to have a live tiger on set, and it’s also very dangerous for the actors,” Robert Kirkman, the Walking Dead creator said, according to Digital Spy.
“Plus – I would not have gone to set if there had been a real tiger anywhere near set, so there’s no real tiger involved. It’s all magic.” He added.
That’s right. Shiva is the result of over four months of hard work from The Walking Dead’s special effects team.
It makes sense. No matter how well trained they are, real tigers can be dangerous to work with. Even the slightest mistake could prove deadly.
“So we created the character and the forms digitally, and then output those into full-size standing and sitting animatronic tigers… The majority of it, will be animatronic.” said The Walking Dead director Greg Nicotero in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
CGI has been used to create Shiva’s facial expressions, fine movements and the different colors of the body.
“And then we will digitally augment with either moving eyes or moving tail, or we will have a few shots if the creature has to walk, take several steps forward, or turn around, or roar, going from a neutral expression to a roaring expression, we’ll do those shots digitally.” Nicotero added.
Fake as he may be, you got to admit Shiva is one majestic and beautiful creature. You just got to love him. Also, kudos to the show’s visual effects team for doing such an amazing job.
